Safest Places in the World to Visit (Part One)
Published Tuesday, July 10th 2018 - Updated Monday, July 16th 2018I learned something new today; which, means it is a very good day. Learning is fun and was something that was lacking in my everyday life until I changed careers. Now, I get to learn on a regular basis! So, what did I learn today that has me writing and almost giddy? Glad you asked. I learned that 1) there is a Global Peace Index, 2) this index is put together by the Institute of Economics and Peace, and 3) they rank the countries of the world by how peaceful they are. Who knew such a thing existed? Not me, at least, until today. The Institute of Economics and Peace has released their top 10 most peaceful countries of the world and I maintain that these are the countries you should try to visit this year!
#1 Iceland: For the past 10 years Iceland has lead the world in peacefulness. I am sure this comes as no surprise to anyone. They have a relatively small population and as far as I can tell, no real enemies. Not to mention, Iceland has some of the most interesting and diverse landscapes on the planet. This beautiful country is definitely on my bucket list! Pictured to the right is Geyser Park in Iceland.
#2 New Zealand: If you did not see this coming, then you don’t know New Zealand. The people of New Zealand are some of the nicest people on the planet. Combine that with its beauty and you have a winning combination. Used for the backdrop of the Lord of The Rings movies this stunning and friendly country has so much to offer. Getting there is half of the battle but well worth the long arduous flight! This country is also on my bucket list. I’m sure that surprises no one!
#3 Austria: Having been to this country, I can attest to its peacefulness. Vienna is a city with a long and storied history but the feel is more modern and contemporary. Of course, you get to see all the historical sites but then even those feel updated (if that is possible). Vienna, "The City of Music" certainly is the crowning glory of Austria but is not the only reason to visit! Pictured to the right is a beautiful side street in Vienna city center. #4 Portugal: In 2016 Conde Nast declared Lisbon the “most underrated city in Europe”. The ranking on the Global Peace Index helps to underscore that sentiment. The country as a whole is an affordable place to live and adds to its appeal to travelers. More people are visiting Portugal than ever before. It hasn’t made my bucket list yet, but give it time. I’m sure the more I learn about Portugal the more I will want to go see for myself.
#5 Denmark: This is another country that I have had the pleasure of visiting. I have to agree with its peacefulness. The time that we spent there was beyond enjoyable. Although I have to admit that the most fun was listening to their epic conflicts with Sweden! The tours through some of the castles and fortresses gave quite a humorous insight to the two countries long and sometimes bitter histories. Definitely worth a visit.
