In case you missed it on the news, Boise (#BOI) has been selected as one of the airports involved in the latest screening procedures announced by the TSA.  Just in time for the summer vacation season, these new screening procedures are designed to make it easier for the screeners but not necessarily for the passengers.  So what are the changes?

All electronic devices larger than a cell phone (tablets, laptops, and e-readers) are to be placed in separate bins.  It used to be that you could stack your electronics together in one bin.  This is no longer true.  Each tablet, laptop, and e-reader will need to be placed in a separate bin.  This will make it easier for the screeners to get a good look at each electronic device.  It certainly beats the days when you had to turn each device on!

In addition to electronics being placed in separate bins, books, and other items need to be removed from carry-on bags.  Doesn’t matter if it is in your backpack, purse, or carry-on luggage that book needs to be out in the open so that it doesn’t impede the x-ray machines from seeing everything in your carry-on.  Check the TSA website for a complete list of what needs to be removed.

So why are they rolling out new procedures?  It’s all in an effort to keep the flying public safe and at the same time, speed up the screening process while being more accurate.  There has been some noise that it is in response to new threats targeted at the United States of hiding explosives in electronics.  However, that threat has been around for a long time and isn’t really anything new.  TSA is dedicated to improving security and hopefully speeding up the process.

These new procedures do not apply to those with the TSAPre-Check.  These passengers have already undergone additional screening in order to get the known traveler card.  Others who received the TSAPre-check are at random, so it’s best to know the new regulations before you head to the airport.  If you need more assistance, always check with your travel agent!  We are here for you
