Air Wars? Really?
Published Friday, February 17th 2017 - Updated Friday, February 17th 2017If you love to travel then you are aware of the pitfalls of trying to get a great flight and a good deal, especially out of smaller regional airports like Boise. In recent years cut rate airlines like Allegiant have moved into these smaller regional markets and provided an alternative to the major airlines. These airlines did not provide a superior service, just a cheaper way to fly. This move has not gone unnoticed by the major airlines and they decided to come up with their own cut rate airfare.
So, if you felt like having to pay for a checked bag was a rip off, you are really not going to like this new fare being rolled out on most of the major airlines. The newest trend in airfares from the major carriers is to offer cheap rates with some pretty tough guidelines. First, they will not assign a seat with these cut rate fares (they are below economy class) until you check in at the airport. Second, you will be the last passengers to board the plane. Last, but not least, you cannot take a carryon bag of any kind, unless it can fit in the small space below the seat in front of you.
I can fit a lot into a small space, but I’m not sure I can get toiletries, change of clothes, and a change of underwear for more than a day or two into that small of a space. Not to mention all of the cords for electronic devices, the electronic devices themselves, personal ID, credit cards, and medications that I might need along the way still need a place to be stowed. So who are the airlines trying to attract with these new fares, you might ask? As a travel agent, I have been trying to figure that one out. I enjoy traveling light, but even I need an overnight bag!
One thought that has come to mind is yet another growing trend in travel; shipping your luggage. A new industry is growing with in the travel segment of shipping your luggage to and from your destination. This would eliminate the need to check a bag or to carry one with you as you travel. It’s an interesting idea. Could I actually ship my bags to my destination, purchase a cut rate airline ticket, and still save money? Stay tuned. We’ll discuss that in another upcoming blog!
