Traveling can be a lot of fun, but it seems like there is always something you didn’t think to pack that got left home.  As a travel agent, I have formed my own list of must haves for every vacation; whether near or far.  Here are my 5 must have travel items.  Never leave home without them!

First Aid Kit:  I married an eagle scout and raised two eagle scouts.  If you only know one thing about scouting it is their motto “be prepared”.  I sometimes take this too far but it is sound advice.  Nobody wants to plan for accidents; however, they happen anyway.  I always have a first aid kit in the car if we are on a road trip and a small portable first aid kit if we are traveling by plane or cruise.  You just never know when you are going to need some antibiotic ointment or a bandage.

Rain Coat/ Umbrella:  We all want sunny skies and pleasant weather on our vacations, but let’s face it…weather happens!  I carry a small compact umbrella in my purse on every vacation.  We also carry those plastic rain ponchos.  They are cheap, functional, and compact.  The three best features in extra items to be packed!

Laundry Supplies:  These days there are all kinds of options for single use laundry items.  Carry a few in case you need to hand wash a few things on your trip.  It will save you time and money in the end.  It never fails, you plan your wardrobe out to the last detail and on the first night you spill something on the perfect white t-shirt that went with half of your outfits.  No worries if you have some supplies on hand.  Just make sure they are easily portable.

Extra Bags:  Depending on the type of vacation you are taking the type of extra bags that you may want will vary.  If you are taking a beach vacation, be sure to pack an easily packable mesh or canvas bag for the beach.  If shopping is on your list, you should probably pack a collapsible duffle styled bag for all of your new found treasures.  If you will be touring cities in foreign lands you may want an inexpensive zippered bag to keep your phone and travel papers secure instead of your fancy purse.  And of course, Ziploc bags for their variety of uses from wet swimsuits to corralling small items.

Portable Power Strip:  Electronics, you can’t live without them but you can’t live with the number of outlets provided!  More and more hotels are starting to add more outlets and  USB styled ports for charting our growing number of must have devices but let’s face it, there is never enough.  We always carry a power strip with a short chord that doesn’t take up much room but delivers a much needed boost in the number of available outlets for charging!
