I will admit freely that I wanted to go on a Rhine River Cruise for one very specific reason.  I had heard about something called “Castle Day”.  I was hooked right there.  Imagine my surprise when I learned what Castle Day was really like.  Here is a brief overview of this particularly stunning section of the Rhine River.

Burg Rheinstein, Rhine River, Rhine River CruiseCastles:  If you are like me and are completely enthralled with castles and their histories, you are going to love the Rhine River Gorge.  This particular section of the Rhine River is blessed with dozens of castles in ruin and rebuilt.  The stories behind some of them are fascinating and sometimes tragic.  I love history and these castles seem to bring it all to life.  It felt like I would barely have time to take in one castle before the next castle started to come into view.  We happened to be on our  Rhine River Cruise in early fall so the leaves were starting to change and it was just magnificent.

Partial Cathedral; Rhine River, Rhine River CruiseChurches:  I didn’t realize that along the Rhine River Gorge there are also many churches.  I should have realized this since if there is a town, there will be at least one church.  These churches are beautifully built and speak a great deal to the faith and industry of these towns.  I love the architecture and detail that they put into these churches and really find them quite delightful.  One, in particular, was quite fascinating because all that was left was a few stunningly gorgeous walls.  The roof was gone and so were the windows.  What made it most beautiful to me was the ability to look through the church as we cruised past and see the vineyard beyond.  There was such simple beauty in this church that I am sure took them generations to get that much of it built.  I would have loved to learn the story behind that church.

Burg Stahleck (Hostile), Rhine River, Rhine River CruiseVineyards:  I am not a wine drinker so I cannot vouch for the taste of the wines from this section of the Rhine River Gorge.  But I can tell you that the vineyards that cover the hills in the section of the Rhine River Gorge add such beauty to the scene.  Imagine if you will, a misty early fall morning.  Mist is rising from the river and melting away from the hills and the vineyards with their perfectly spaced rows of grapevines come into focus.  Then you notice small dots among the rows and you realize those small dots are actually humans harvesting the grapes.  It was just beautiful.  I tried several times to capture its beauty but none of my photos really did any of it any justice.
