Yarmouth Anyone?
Published Thursday, May 17th 2018 - Updated Wednesday, July 11th 2018I seriously doubt that Yarmouth will ever be on anyone’s bucket list, but it is a wonderful discovery none the less. We recently had the opportunity to spend the day exploring Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada while on an expedition cruise with Hurtigruten. It was a real treat and did not disappoint.
It is not often that your ship is met by the mayor and Counselman from the community that you are visiting, but that is what happened when we made a stop in Yarmouth. And the friendliness did not stop there. They had someone there handing out maps of the community along with guidebooks and directions to some of the more popular attractions. Some of the stores and eateries opened early to accommodate our ship’s arrival. Everywhere we went we were welcomed and asked if we needed directions or anything else. Talk about friendly!!
The largest attraction is the County Museum which has some pretty nice exhibits. It is not a large museum and it will not take you long to go through. They do have some fun and unique items. Be sure to go downstairs and see if you can figure out what the large ball-like item is. The story is worth finding the answer. Right next to the museum, is the “Fuller Brush House”. Mr. Fuller himself used the house as a summer home. Originally the house belonged to his second wife’s parents. When they passed away, they turned the home into their summer home. The house was turned over to the city for a museum by Mrs. Fuller at her passing. The docents are friendly and knowledgeable. It is a fun little find.
Just walking down the main street was fun. Lots of interesting shops and of course the friendly denizens where out to welcome us. I am a fan of Victorian architecture and this town has that in spades. If I had been able to, I would have loved to spend more time just walking the streets and taking pictures of all the houses.
This is probably not a place that you would want to spend a week exploring, but it was a fun little stop on our journey.
