Why I Love Uber

When it comes to travel, I am less experienced than my husband.  Unfortunately, I am also less adventurous.  He has traveled more frequently and with a broader range than I have.  So when it comes to trying new modes of transportation, I tend to be leery.  I grew up in a smallish town in Idaho and if I needed to get anywhere I walked, rode my bike, or drove.  So when I began traveling I was not so keen on more public forms of transportation.  I have never felt particularly safe or comfortable in a taxi.  Not to say that taxi drivers are untrustworthy, I just haven’t felt at ease in a taxi. So when Uber started up and advertising in Boise, I was far from enthusiastic to give it a try.  It wasn’t until we were trying to secure transportation for a late midnight arrival from the Fort Lauderdale airport to our hotel that the idea of using Uber even became an option.  The more we learned about Uber and the way they conducted business, the more we liked them as an option.  Here are my top 4 reasons for loving Uber.

No Money, Honey!

One of my reasons for not feeling comfortable in a taxi revolves around the payment.  Taxis are required to have working credit card machines in the cabs; however, I have rarely ridden in one that does.  I also rarely carry cash.  See the problem here?  Also, with all the credit card fraud going on who’s to say the credit card reader is secure?  With Uber the payment is all handled within the app.  The driver never sees my card and I never have to worry about how much cash to carry.  Win! Win!

How Much is the Ride?

Another reason I am uncomfortable in a taxi is the price.  Why is it you don’t know how much it is going to cost until after you are in the car and at your destination?  Okay, I admit it!  I am a little bit of a control freak when it comes to travel, and I want to know what it is going to cost before I go.  I worry over every penny (yes, it takes a little of the fun out of travel.  I’m working on it!).  With Uber, before you even send for a car, the app will give you an estimate of how much the ride is going to cost.  Simply enter the address you need to get to and it will tell you about how much the fare will be and the approximate time it will take.  We knew how much it was going to cost to get to our hotel from the Fort Lauderdale airport before we ever left Boise. I like this, I can plan for this!  I win again!

I’m Riding in What?

It’s always a roll of the dice when you get in a taxi.  Most are clean-ish and they do get you from point A to point B safely, but not all the cars are in great shape.  With Uber, the cars are owned by the drivers and are in impeccable condition.  Every Uber car I have gotten into has been so clean it looks like it just rolled off the car dealership’s lot.  Not only that, but I get a picture of the driver and what he/she will be driving at the time I place my request for a car.  The app will also tell me how long before the driver gets there and will show me on a map exactly where the car is.  I can watch them approach if I want to.  If we somehow miss each other, the driver can call me or I can call the driver.  When in an unfamiliar place it’s easy to get directions wrong so the ability to communicate is priceless. Winning!

All’s Fair!

Once the ride is over and you have reached your destination the app will tell you the final amount and payment is made through the app.  No money changes hands.  No fumbling with the credit card reader (that doesn’t work half the time).  No drama.  Best part of all?  I get to review my driver and he/she gets to review me!  Yes, it’s all fair with Uber.
