Tipping is a tricky subject.  If you are like me, you have a hard enough time knowing what to tip the server at your favorite restaurant, let alone the staff at an all-inclusive resort!  As travel agents we get asked this question quite often.  The resorts will tell you that the tip is included, making it a truly all-inclusive experience.  I have learned; however, that tipping is not so cut and dried.  So what do you tip?  Here are some general rules to follow.

Maid Service:  At an all-inclusive resort the service should be above and beyond what you are accustomed to.  If this is the case then it is recommended that you leave a dollar or two each day for the maid that services your room.  The tip is entirely up to you. One thing to keep in mind, some maids expect that tip and when it is not forthcoming, they may take matters in their own hands.  You might want to hide the remote before she does.  That shouldn’t be the case, but don’t be surprised if it happens to you.

Bartenders and Servers:  Since the drinks are included at the resort it’s hard to know how to tip a particularly attentive server and bartender.  Best rule of thumb here is to tip a dollar for every 2 drinks.  Again, tipping is not expected but should be handed out as a reward for great service.  If you are purchasing top shelf drinks that are not included in your resort amenities, then you should tip as you normally would (a percentage of the cost of the drink).

Restaurant/Buffet:  Again, the food, whether it’s a restaurant or a buffet is included in the all-inclusive resort, so do you tip?  If the service is as it should be, above and beyond expectations, then yes.  A couple of dollars goes a long way to expressing your gratitude for making the meal a pleasant and enjoyable experience.  The food should be great no matter what!

A tip is always welcome when a member of the resort staff goes the extra mile to make your stay memorable.  It should not be expected as a matter of course but should be given when service level is exceptional.  Many travelers have found it helpful to travel with a good supply of one dollar bills to make tipping more convenient.  In most places that have all-inclusive resorts a dollar goes a long way.
