Surf's Up
Published Monday, May 22nd 2017 - Updated Tuesday, March 17th 2020Looking for a great place to go surfing? Have I got a recommendation for you! We were recently in Nicaragua and found some fantastic places to surf. The water was warm and the beaches uncrowded. Here are the specifics of our experience.
We arrived in San Juan del Sur on a cruise ship. It isnot a largely traveled port so we did have to tender in to the dock. We walked from the dock area to the main town. It is actually quite small; however, it has a few surf shops that will help you arrange transportation to the better surfing areas and give surf lessons. They package it together to make life simple for you. You will actually save a little bit of money if you go through the surf shops.
We bypassed the surf shop and found a taxi willing to drive us out to a specific beach and come back at a designated time to bring us back. Here you might want to use some caution, depending on how picky you are. We were not feeling picky so we didn’t make sure that the taxi had air conditioning or that the driver spoke English. We simply negotiated for the price of the transportation and the return time. In case you are wondering, the taxi did not have air conditioning, he did not speak English, and I am certain the shocks had worn out on his vehicle. It was fun none the less.
Once we were at the beach we wanted to surf at, the drive went the extra mile and introduced us to one of the instructors. This made the process smooth and quite enjoyable. The beach we tried did have an entrance fee; however, it was a small sum and not a problem.
The beach was almost empty except for the handful of other surfers there to enjoy the waves. The water was surprisingly warm! It was a nice warm day and it was humid; however the water was the ideal temperature. Goldilocks would have loved it! Most of the other surfers were from Europe (Germany and France), a few from Canada and the United States. English was spoken by most and communication was not an issue.
Ideally you would want to spend several days there. If you are looking to learn to surf for the first time, or you want to improve your skill lever, or you just want a great place to surf, this is a great spot. We only had the day and would have loved to stay longer. Let us know when you are ready to plan your trip!
