You would think that after exiting the Rhine River Gorge on Amastella where every turn seemed to offer a new adventure and another castle, that everything else would be a letdown.  Not true.  The fun village of Rudesheim has a wonderful old town with lots of winding streets and fun shops.  It is easily reached by the river but if you don’t want to walk, they have a “train” that can take you into town from the river dock.  They call it a train but I find it difficult to call anything that runs on the road pulled by a gas motor a train.  But that is me.

Rudesheimer Coffee

I can’t vouch for the coffee, I don’t ever drink it, but apparently is quite good and strong.  I believe it is spiked with a little something extra.  Any trip to this area would not be complete without a sample of this fascinating brew.  I do understand the irony of that statement considering that I just said I didn’t do that.  None the less, you really should enjoy a cup and you can even toast to me while you do it.

Active Options

The area has much to offer and if you are looking for something off the beaten track, there are several things you can do.  First, take a hike through the many vineyards to the ruins of the Ehrenfels Castle.  It is about a 6-mile hike through the steep vineyards and along a nice dirt track road to the ruins.  If that is a little more than you want to do, try taking a bike tour through the area.  The vineyards are beautiful and of course there is the stunning Rhine River to enjoy as well.  Still too much for you?  How about taking a gondola ride over the vineyards with great views of the towns, river, and the vineyards.  This area has a lot to offer and you can choose how you want to explore.

Sidgried’s Music Cabinet

This is actually more of a mechanical music museum.  Despite the subject matter it is quite interesting.  They have more mechanical music options that I had never heard of to make the stop an interesting one.  The options range from an entire mechanical orchestra to an old Edison Victrola, to a kind of creepy mechanical music machine complete with stuffed animals and dolls.
