New TSA Ban on Powders Takes Effect
Published Monday, July 2nd 2018 - Updated Wednesday, July 11th 2018The TSA has instituted a new rule for carrying powders into the United States. If you are unaware of the changes, you could find your items being confiscated by TSA. Last year there was an attempt to carry powdered explosives onto an Australian commercial flight. The powder was found and confiscated before the flight; however, the incident has sparked concern by TSA over the possibility of a similar incident occurring in the USA. Many foreign airport security agencies began initiating a ban on powders after the Australian incident. In an effort to create conformity the TSA has now asked all foreign security agencies to screen for powders on flights entering the United States.
So what powders do you need to be aware of? These powders can no longer be taken through security: Baby powder, protein powder, dried spices, and just about any other powder in quantities greater than 12 oz. If the TSA screeners can not immediately identify what the powder is, it will be confiscated and thrown away. If you need to travel with powdered baby formula, the best practice would be to carry it in its original packaging. If you don’t, you run the risk of it being confiscated as well.
