Mykonos, Greece Review and Recommendations
Published Tuesday, February 19th 2019 - Updated Wednesday, March 25th 2020The Greek Islands is one of those places that I never dreamed I would have the opportunity to visit. Just always thought it was going to be too difficult and expensive to get there. Imagine my delight when we found a stunningly great deal on a cruise that included many of the Greek Islands! We instantly jumped at the opportunity and I have not regretted it.
Mykonos is a wonderful Island that has gained a reputation for a “party” island. I imagine that during the peak season it can be quite riotous, especially at the clothing optional beaches of which, there are two. However, we arrived towards the end of the season and experienced a different Mykonos. One surprise was the aridness of the island. Often, I think of the Mediterranean as a humid and lush area. Silly since it is surrounded by some pretty arid countries but that is the picture I had in my head.
Old Town. The old town in Mykonos is really an experience that you have to try. The streets are a labyrinth and were deliberately built that way. The intent was to confuse and disorient any invaders. It is quite effective. Only currently the invaders are shoppers and tourists and it does a nice job of sucking you in and enticing you with some pretty remarkable items! The winding and cobblestone streets lead you to dead ends, courtyards, and beautiful shops. This is a pedestrian-only area and wonderful to stroll and explore. If you get tired and hungry, just stop at a gelato shop and enjoy some delightful flavors.
Windmills. I stupidly thought that only certain areas of Europe had and used windmills. Silly, I know. Mykonos is well known for its old windmills and they have the tower over the old town. These old windmills are charming and quite fun to explore. There are some really beautiful views of the old town from the windmills and some great views of the Old Harbor as well.
Off the Beaten Path. There are beaches that are more family friendly should you want a day at the beach here. You can also rent scooters and ATV’s to explore the island as well. Keep in mind that when renting a car, scooter, or ATV it is advised to have an international drivers license. This can be easily obtained online and will not cost much. It is just something you must secure before leaving home.
