This set of islands are almost sand bars. This geological quirk makes them rugged and stunningly beautiful. Again this is a French speaking location but the inhabitants were extremely nice and welcoming. This fishing community also has some of the best cheese around! One of the best ways to see this area is on a bike. They do bicycle tours or you could rent a moped. Either way, you need to climb to the top of the knoll that is right by the harbor. From there you can get some pretty spectacular views.

There is also a beautiful walkway that runs along the coast line. If you get tired of walking the path, you can take one of the many side paths that lead back into the community. Here is a great shot of the coastline. If you look closely, you can make out the walkway that runs along it (look for the fence. It helps mark the path).
Beautiful Coastline of Les-Iles-de-la-Madeleine
The coastline here is made up mostly of the same red rock you find on PEI. It makes for a beautifully rugged landscape.

I couldn't get enough of all of the fishing boats. They are rugged and beautiful in their own way.

It's not everyday that you can see lobster traps, a boat, and a house all in the same place. The boat is, obviously, out of water, but it made for a great shot.
Beautiful Les-Iles-de-la-Madeleine
The rustic feel of this place is enchanting. Friendly and kind, the people here were helpful and welcoming. Even if they couldn't speak English well, they did their best. We greatly enjoyed our time here.

These islands are truly off the beaten path but are beautiful and have a wonderful personality. They make some pretty great cheese here as well. If you find yourself in the Bay of St. Lawrence, you should see if you can't get a ferry to Les-Iles-de-la-Madeleine for the day. Take a ride on a bike or moped and take in the rugged beauty of these wonderful islands. We had the good fortune to be here while on an expedition cruise with Hurtigruten. We arrive a little early in the season or we would have rented a moped. Wonderfully rugged and friendly set of islands.
