Historic Halifax
Published Thursday, May 31st 2018 - Updated Wednesday, March 18th 2020The last stop of our most recent adventure was in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. We had been on an expedition cruise exploring some pretty and remote areas in and around the Gulf of St. Lawrence with Hurtigruten. If you are a history buff you really need to go see Halifax and immerse yourself in its history and charm.
Halifax has one of the deepest inside bays and was a major jumping off place for ships heading to and from Europe. During World War I it was a major player in getting supplies to the front in Europe. This bay played a major role and was thus targeted by German subs to try and stop shipping. On December 6, 1917, a ship carrying munitions to Europe collided with another ship causing the largest explosion known to man that was not atomic. You can learn all about it when you visit.
If you are a Titanic buff then you know the role Halifax and the surrounding area played in the disaster. They have a Titanic graveyard that is open to the public and you can see some of the people buried there. The fortress that sits on the hill overlooking the bay is also quite interesting and unique. Most of the city of Halifax was devastated during the above-mentioned explosion but there are still some remnants to be found if you know where to look. We did a self-guided walking tour and found a projectile still stuck in the wall of a church. You will have to look that one up yourself. I don’t want to give too much away.
Peggy’s Cove is another place that you should take the time to go visit. Mostly known for its breathtaking scenery this beautiful little area was actually closed while we were there. You should also walk along the waterfront and tour the Immigration Museum located near the cruise port. Halifax has a wonderfully rich and interesting history and deserves a closer look.
