Historic Halifax

The history in Halifax, our last port of call on our expedition cruise with Hurtigruten, is deep and rich.  If you want to learn about the largest explosion that did not involve a nuclear weapon, then you need to visit Halifax.  During World War I, a ship full of munitions collided with another ship resulting in the explosion.  We had a wonderful time exploring Halifax even though it was raining hard!  We got completely soaked but loved every minute of it.  Should you get the chance, check out the Immigration Museum down by the docks.  This museum is housed in the actual buildings that once made up Halifax's immigration system.  They have interesting displays and a movie that highlights its importance.  Well worth a visit...especially on rainy days.

Citadel sits atop a hill that overlooks both Halifax and the bay.  This historic citadel is rich with history even though it was never attacked.  We took a self guided walking tour of the area and it was well worth the time.  Pictured here is the rock wall that surrounds the citadel.  The opening is where the guards are located and the doors could be slammed shut and bolted within seconds.  A true fortress designed to protect the city and the bay.

This beautiful clock tower was built in conjunction of the fort and continues to be an important landmark.

Had the weather cooperated more fully, we would have had more time to explore all the wonders of Halifax.  Places of note are the Titanic GraveyardPeggy's Cove (known for its beautiful landscape), Point Pleasant Park, the Waterfront, and many many more places.  Halifax is a wonderful destination all on its own.  You could easily spend several days here exploring and taking in the rich history.  I really think I need to go back and explore some more.
