Explore San Diego
Published Wednesday, August 9th 2017 - Updated Friday, August 18th 2017Looking for a place to go with great weather year-round? Have I got a suggestion for you! San Diego, California has wonderful weather and some great things to do in addition to laying on the beach. While Boise was baking in the summer heat we escaped to the cooler – yes, you read that correctly, the cooler temperatures of San Diego. While Boise was baking in near 100-degree temps San Diego was sitting pretty in the mid 70-degree range. Granted it does have slightly higher humidity but at 75-degrees does it really matter?
Points of interest away from the beach include the Marine Museum, the Midway Aircraft Carrier, Balboa Park, Old Town San Diego, the Gas Lamp district, and Little Italy. They all have wonderful things to do and see. If you truly want the beach environment, try heading over to Coronado. All beaches are public and some of the best spots are over by the Del Coronado Hotel. If you have the budget you should splurge on a stay at this enchanting hotel. I am absolutely nuts over Victorian architecture and was mesmerized by all the beautiful details.
Other great sights include Sea World and San Diego Zoo; however, if you really want a treat you should head further inland to the Safari Park. Nestled in the hills this beautiful park is truly a gem. The idea is to let the animals enjoy some space and even intermingle a little bit. Of course, great care is taken that predators and prey are not in the same enclosures. The facility is also known for its breeding program. Many of the babies born here go to other zoos; however, they do release some back into the wild. If you plan to go during the summer like we did, be advised that the temperatures inland are much hotter than along the coastline. While the temperatures closer to the coast were a delightful 78-degrees at the Safari Park temperatures soared into the 100-degree range. You will definitely want to plan for a lot of time at this park. We were there for 4 hours and I felt like we just skimmed the surface. Safari Park is truly a must see if you like animals. Let us know when you are ready to plan your trip!
