Hurtigruten is probably the best cruise line you have never heard of.  I kid you not!  This cruise line, based in Norway, specializes in all the places most cruise lines don’t go or you may never have heard of.  To be a little more general they are your polar exploration specialists.

 

 

 

Norwegian Coastal Cruises:

 

Hurtigruten’s bread and butter cruise is their Coast of Norway cruises.  They have no less than 9 ships that sail the coast of Norway with a variety of options.  Best of all they sail the coast of Norway all year long and from October to March they have a “Northern Lights Guarantee”.  If you sail the Bergan to Bergan roundtrip itinerary between October and March and do not see the Northern Lights, you will get a free cruise.  In the past 5 years, they have not had to give away one cruise.  You will see the Northern Lights.

 

Antarctica Expedition Cruises:

 

Hurtigruten specializes in the exploration of Antarctica.  They have 3 ships that sail to Antarctica with a variety of itineraries and lengths of stay.  They sail this area of the world during October and March each year.  Antarctica actually has three different and distinct seasons.  The early season is best for those travelers interested in photography, snowshoeing, and seeing pristine white snow.  During the mid-season is the best time to see Antarctica if your interest lies in seeing a variety of animal life.  Late season is best for those wanting to see the most mammals and have better weather.  One word of caution:  if smells are a concern for you, you do not want to go in the late season.  Penguins are adorable but they are messy and the smell can be overwhelming.  In addition to Antarctica, you can see the Falkland Islands and South Georgia Island.  These itineraries are full of immersive options and activities.  You can count on lectures and presentations from the expedition teams.
