El Dorado Maroma
Published Friday, November 10th 2017 - Updated Wednesday, March 18th 2020Did our travel agent duty and visited another beautiful resort in Cancun, Mexico. This time we are off to see the El Dorado Maroma. The Resort at El Dorado Maroma is a beautiful and expansive resort that sits snuggly on the beach. The grounds are lush and sculpted to perfection. Though the resort boasts a lot of rooms it has a nice small feel to it. Like most all-inclusive resorts, there are multiple places to eat, drink, and swim.
The claim to fame for this resort is it's over the water bungalows. Normally I am all over an over the water bungalow. I am so in love with the concept; however, in this case not so much. The bungalows themselves are laid out in such a way that the space feels small and cramped, even with the patio doors wide open. The deck area is also small. The bathroom, on the other hand, is almost as large as the bedroom with a shower that leads directly outside so you can shower before and after swimming in the ocean. This brings me to the last disappointment, the beach area.
The bungalows that face the ocean, which are in my opinion the most desirable, face a variety of black tarped mounds that completely ruin the view. It is clear that they are trying to build up a breakwater of some kind; however, in the meantime, the view is destroyed and it lacks that paradise feel that people are spending large sums of money to enjoy. Unless you really enjoy watching seagulls resting and pooping the view isn’t worth the price. The bungalows that do not face the ocean face a beach that has similar issues and has murky water to boot. With glass floors that look down on the water, you would think they would be more concerned about the water quality.
Another disappointment is their restaurants. It is a problem for me to schedule all of my eating arrangements at the time I check in. For one thing, I kind of like to get to know an area and I also like to see how the day feels. Sometimes you just want to wing it and one of those times should be your vacation. The resort restaurants are busy enough that they want you to book your reservations for your stay on the day you check in. They claim that they have plenty of room and that this is a measure to ensure that you don’t have to wait for a table. That may be the truth; however, I don’t like that requirement. I want more flexibility.
On the upside, they have some fantastic options for families. They have villas that can sleep up to 10 people. This could be a great option for families who want to share living quarters and spread the expense out over the groups. It is always wise to check out the cost difference between individual rooms vs a villa that can accommodate multiple people.
