Dublin - Things To Do

If you haven’t had time to visit Dublin yet, you really should put in on your shortlist of things to do. Besides being the largest city in the Republic of Ireland, it is a beautiful city with a pretty interesting history. I recommend staying in Dublin for several days. There is much to see and do in Dublin itself and there is even more in the surrounding area that can be done as day trips. If you want to see Ireland, you will need to get out of the city; however, Dublin is a world unto itself and is well worth the visit. Here are some of the highlights.
Trinity College:
Trinity College is located in central Dublin and is well worth a visit. The book of Kells is located in its library and you can view the book while on exhibit. It is currently not available for viewing but will be open again soon. You can walk through the grounds of the college or during certain hours you can take a tour.
Jamison Distillery and Guinness Brewery:
Ireland is all about pub life and the heart of this is Jamison Whiskey and Guinness Beer. You can take a tour of both of these facilities to learn more about their history, brewing/distilling processes, and of course, sample the goods. When in Ireland you really should try the pubs and the local brews.
City Tour:
I highly recommend taking a city tour, especially on your first or second day. A city tour is a wonderful way to get a feel of the city and how it is laid out and get an overview of the whole city. From there you will be able to better understand Dublin and where you want to try and spend more time. If you enjoy the Hop-on/ Hop-off bus tours this is an excellent way to get a good overview. The route takes about 2 hours if you want to ride the whole loop then go back to the places that you want to spend time, it is a great way to spend your first day in the city. Kilmainham Gaol Museum:
Kilmainham Gaol was a prison where many who fought for Irish independence spent time and were often executed for their efforts. This museum is so popular that it can be quite difficult to get tickets. Tickets can be purchased as much as 60 days in advance. If you can’t get tickets before your visit to Dublin, you can try booking online each morning between 9:15 – 9:30 a.m. These tickets sell out very quickly so plan ahead.
The Little Museum of Dublin:
The Little Museum of Dublin is a museum about all things Dublin. Everything there has been donated and is kind of fun and quirky. The tour takes only about 29 minutes but is the best 29 minutes you will ever spend. You can quickly learn the history of Dublin and some of the major events that shaped the city. The Irish Times has declared the museum the best in Dublin. If you take the Hop-on/ Hop-off tour, you can get a discount on your entrance fee. Worth the time. Grafton Quarter:
If shopping or Retail Therapy is on your list, then you need to visit the Grafton Quarter near Trinity College. During the day, this area is drivable but at night it turns into a pedestrian-only area and can be quite fun. There are numerous pubs to visit as well as some wonderful shops. If nothing else, this area is a wonderful place to just walk around and soak up Dublin. You can find musicians out on the streets performing, old quaint buildings, beautiful small streets, and plenty of history. Pictured here is Dublin Castle.
