I wrote a post several years ago about the Cancun Airport.  Since that time many changes have taken place at the Cancun Airport and I thought it would be wise to write and update.  Things change over the years and it is always nice to get a fresh update.

First, the Cancun Airport has undergone and is in the process of completing a major renovation.  The Cancun Airport is now larger, cleaner, and a little easier to navigate.  For us, there was a rather long walk to get to customs and to collect our luggage, but once there it was all pretty straightforward.

Second, instead of the “Red Light, Green Light” game at customs, you went to a booth and cleared customs, and are done.  You should be given a form during your flight that needs to be filled out and given to the customs agents.  Be sure to fill out both the top and bottom portions of the form.  They will return the bottom portion to you.  This will act as your visa while in Mexico.  Do not lose this form.  We kept ours in our passports.  The lines for us were quite fast-moving.  It looked like it was going to take all day, but once in a line, they moved quickly and efficiently.

Third, leaving the airport is a little tricky.  Even though they have large signs, it was a little tricky to figure out which exit to take.  We simply went through the “Nothing To Declare” exit and all was well.  The hall is quite large and there are several exits to choose from.  It looks like they have plans to expand the customs area further.  If they do, I hope they make their signage a little more clear.

Fourth, leaving the airport is not as easy as it sounds.  Now, we have been to the Cancun Airport twice.  We always advise our clients to not stop or talk to anyone until they are outside.  There is a large open hallway leading to the exit.  This area is filled with people trying to get you to stop and talk about timeshares.  They have gotten rather crafty these days.  They will approach you in the guise of trying to help you find your transfer service.  Do not be fooled, they are trying to get you to stop and talk to one of their people about a timeshare.

To be completely open, we have fallen for this ploy twice.  Yes, you read that right, we fell for their ploys both times.  So even a seasoned traveler can make mistakes.  It is how we learn, unfortunately for us.  If you want to read about our first experience, you can click here.
