Beautiful Bonne Bay
Published Tuesday, May 29th 2018 - Updated Tuesday, March 17th 2020We recently had the good fortune to discover a hidden gem called Bonne Bay on an expedition cruise we took with Hurtigruten. Located in Newfoundland, Canada, this area is a world heritage sites because of its unique geology. That is not the only reason to visit Bonne Bay.
Let’s talk geology for just a minute. We all know that there are three parts to the earth, the core, the mantle and the crust. In just a few remarkable locations on the earth, you can see part of the mantle that was pushed up when tectonic plates crash into each other. One such location is Gros-Morne National Park in Canada. The remarkable park displays the wonders of this phenomenon where part of the mantle has actually come to the surface. The rocks from the mantle are highly rich in minerals making them uninviting to most plant life. There are only a few species that can handle the mineral-rich rock. The Tablelands give the feeling of being in a desert while the mountains just across from it are covered in trees.
The scenery in Bonne Bay is also something to enjoy. With mountain and rock formations that were sculpted by glaciers, you could have a hard time deciding if you were in Newfoundland or Alaska. Many of the features are the same. By far the most impressive view is the flat-topped mountains included in Gros-Morne National Park. Not to be outdone by the mountains, the villages in the area are beautiful and have a stunning backdrop. Being a fishing community this area sports the brightly painted houses where the fishermen keep the supplies and tie their boats up just outside. I love this tradition and would love to learn where it came from.
If you happen to be traveling to the eastern coast of Canada and have the opportunity to go to Newfoundland, you really should stop in on Bonne Bay and discover the wondrous beauty of this area.
