Acajutla, El Salvador
Published Wednesday, March 18th 2020It's not every day that you get to visit places like Acajutla, El Salvador. The place is trying to put itself on the tourism map. They try hard but still have a little work to do. That is not to say that it is not worth visiting. If you are used to typical tourist locations this one will feel a little rough around the edges. We liked it anyway.
So what is there in El Salvador that would draw you to it's borders? First of all, the people. This place went out of it's way to make us feel welcome and secure. Our guide was kind and full of stories. He enjoyed interacting with us on a personal level and told us stories of his visit to the United States. Things went off the tracks a little bit here. I think he was trying a little too hard to be open and friendly. Never the less, he was an enjoyable person and a knowledgeable guide.
We were most excited to see the Mayan Ruins in El Salvador. We have had the chance to see several examples in other countries and wanted to see theirs to learn more about the culture. The Mayan Ruins in El Salvador are examples of how the Mayans were learning to build and construct the pyramids and other buildings. They have unfortunately lost some of their heritage through various means and are clinging to what they have left. They are proud of it as well they should be.
We had the pleasure of driving around the country side to get to the ruins and this afforded us view of their extinct volcanoes. The story of there eruptions that burried the site we went to visit was interesting and it is hard to imagine what it would have been like to live during those times. This also gave us the opportunity to see some of the spectacular birds and exotic fruits. Who knew that a cashew was actually part of a fruit? I sure didn't. This was quite the eye opening discovery!
Though Acajutla may not be on everyone's lists of places they want to see, it was a delight none the less. For your next adventure, be sure to contact us, your exploration experts. We can help you find fantastic out of the way locations for all of your exploration needs.
