Pompeii - Private Tour
Published Wednesday, March 25th 2020 - Updated Wednesday, March 25th 2020I think all of us grew up with the story of Pompeii and how it was buried by the eruption of Mt Vesuvius. So when the opportunity came to go and see this place it was a no brainer that I was going to go. We were on a Greek Isle cruise but one of the last ports of call was Naples, Italy, and Pompeii is just a short hop, skip, and a jump away. We decided to get a private tour since we were traveling with friends and a private tour was quite affordable. I would not go to Pompeii without a knowledgeable guide. I think having a great guide important when visiting a place like Pompeii.
We were greeted by our guide at the entrance and the tour was off and running. It is hard to imagine how much information they have learned about Pompeii and the life that its citizens lived by what was left behind. I had no idea that the city of Pompeii was as large as it was. We only visited a fraction of the site and it was still quite amazing. Some of the items they have found are quite heartbreaking but at the same time learning about them was fascinating.
Many of the artifacts are in Naples at a museum but there are still some amazing things on display there on site. I especially enjoyed learning about their lifestyle and how the city was run. We visited where a mill once stood. The stones were still there. We were treated to some mosaic floors, a bathhouse, and homes of various sizes. We strolled through streets that had once been full and vibrant. The streets were engineered so that they could be washed free of debris and other unpleasant items but still allow citizens to cross undisturbed and carriages to pass through. There are so many marvelous items to discover and learn about in this amazing city.
As we were leaving the site, our guide pointed out where new sections of the city were still being discovered. Many of these sites are occupied with modern buildings but they are exploring ways of uncovering the ruins without disturbing the modern. I would like to go back someday and explore further. I didn’t quite get enough of Pompeii on this visit.
