Amazing Sicily
Published Wednesday, March 25th 2020Sicily is both beautiful and fascinating. We have the opportunity to visit Sicily during our Greek Island Cruise that departed out of Civitavecchia, Italy. I had very low expectations of Sicily before we left on our cruise so it was an amazing eye-opener. We decided rather than taking a tour at this port, we would explore on our own. This turned out to be a fantastic decision.
Upon arrival at the port, we negotiated with a taxi driver to take us and our traveling companions to several of the places that we wanted to see in Sicily. He graciously negotiated his fee and the time allowed for the tour. He was delightful to work with and had a great sense of humor. And as a side note he was both a great whistler and a great singer. He treated us to both!
Our first stop was Savoca, one of the small villages located in the hills of Sicily used during the filming of the “Godfather” movies. This small village as so beautiful. It seemed to cling to the side of the hill and was crowned by an old church. Wandering around was both safe and inviting. We were given time to just roam and explore on our own. It was a little rainy that day but it was so worth the time. I didn’t care that much about the town being used in The Godfather, it was just a beautiful place to stop and take in the surroundings.
Our second stop of the day was Forza d'Agrò, another town used in the filming of The Godfather. This town was not quite as beautiful as Savoca but still worth exploring. The streets are narrow and call to be explored. Another church or castle topped the hill. It was locked so we couldn’t fully explore but there were some very stunning views along the way. We had a wonderful time exploring on our own. If nothing else, the drive was magnificent.
Our last stop of the day was to Taormina. This beautiful old and new town is another wonderful place to explore. The old town is mostly pedestrian walkways but a few cars do enter. If you get the chance, you need to check out their Greek Amphitheater. In addition to being a wonderful example of Greek Architecture and history, it also provides some amazing views of the coastline below and the other villages dotting the surrounding hills.
Our time in Sicily was breathtaking and amazing. I went in with low expectations but it was worth every minute that we spent here. When you are ready to plan your next trip, contact us, your travel experts!
