Weltenburg Abbey - Danube River Cruise with Photos
Published Monday, March 23rd 2020While is Regensburg we had the opportunity to visit the Weltenburg Abbey. To get there we took a ferry up the Danube River to the Weltenburg Abbey. It is located right on the river and is known for its beer. We are in Germany after all. Here are a few of our favorite photos from Weltenburg Abbey.
This is the best photo I could get of the Abbey from the river. The Abbey was once pink but it has faded to a beautiful peach tone.
The H.W. on the wall is an abbreviation for High Water. The dates are Day, Month, then Year. It is crazy that the Abbey is still standing when you see how high the water has gotten. The Abbey is now protected by a high tech flood prevention wall. Before the wall was installed the citizens would come running to help save the Abbey when the river would flood.
This is the first view of Weltenburg Abbey as you come around a bend in the river.
This section of Weltenburg Abbey holds the church. The Abbey is built in the approximate shape of a square with a large courtyard in the middle. This is taken from the courtyard.
You are allowed to step inside the church to look around. This photo is of the Alter at the head of the chapel. Such amazing detail.
If you get the chance to visit Weltenburg Abbey, its a great visit. They do make beer here and are quite well known for their brew. Our tour included a beer tasting.
