Wachau Valley - Danube River Cruise with Photos
Published Monday, March 23rd 2020The Wachau Valley is known primarily for its vineyards. To be honest, the vineyards were the least interesting part to see. This beautiful valley carved by the Danube River is naturally beautiful but its history makes it intriguing. This is the land of Castles and Robber Barons! Here are a few of our favorite photos.
This is situated on a bend in the river and as you come around the bend it unfolds in front of you! It was breathtaking and such a joy to behold. The fortification walls blend in almost seamlessly with the rock cliffs. You have to look closely to see where one stops and the other begins.
I love how this building seems to just rise out of the rocks. I am assuming it is a church because of the cross on the top. Whatever it is, it dominates the riverside.
I love how this newer chruch is married with an ancient rock wall. The contrast is stunning. In the background you can see the vineyards spreading out like a carpet.
To make use of all available growing space the vineyards are terraced up the sides of the hills. They are not just along the river, the extend further back into the hills.
This deserted fortress was actually never used by a king or a baron. The citizens of the town took it upon themselves to protect themselves. They built the fortress and when it was no longer needed, let it decline. Still beautiful
