Melk Abbey, Agency Danube River Cruise

Melk Abbey sits on a hill overlooking the city of Melk.  Its importance to the area is obvious from the way it dominates the hill.  They actually built the hill out a little bit on the top to make more room for the growing Abbey.  One wing of Melk Abbey was used to house the royals when they came to call.  We arrived here on a river cruise and to be quite honest had never heard of Melk before booking the river cruise.  Here are some of our favorite photos from Melk and Melk Abbey.

 

This is actually taken from the Abbey and looking down on the city below.  I love that this old church is in the shadow, so to speak, of the Abbey.

 

 

 

This beautiful archway and walking path leads down to the old town of Melk.  Most tours will take you by bus to the top of the hill to explore Melk Abbey; however, if you want to see the old town, just take this path down.  It is worth the walk, and if you came by river cruise, the walk back to the ship is quite easy and relaxing.

 

 

This is the view of the Abbey from the old town of Melk.  It towers over the town watching over it like a very protective father!

 

For preservation purposes you are not allowed to take pictures inside the Abbey.  If we could have I would have taken hundreds of pictures just of the ceilings and floors.  They were amazing.  To give you a little taste of what is inside the Abbey, I took this picture of the ceiling in one of the arches leading into Melk Abbey courtyard outside.

 

 

These are some of the arches leading into one of the Abbey courtyards.  Part of the Abbey is now a school so that area is not included in the tour. The details of the Abbey are quite remarkable.
