Wellington Recommendations
Published Monday, July 22nd 2019 - Updated Monday, July 22nd 2019Auckland might be the largest city in New Zealand; however, Wellington is the capital. The beautiful city of Wellington is the most southern city on the North Island of New Zealand. We had the distinct pleasure of spending time in Wellington during our recent travels through New Zealand. Here are a few of our recommendations.
Weta Cave: One of the more fascinating places to visit while in Wellington, is Weta Cave. If you enjoy movies, then you need to stop by this fascinating place to enjoy life-sized sculptures, props from movies, and a documentary detailing the history. Peter Jackson co-owns Weta Workshop. Much of the props and work for the Lord of the Rings movies were made and developed here. On an interesting side note; Weta Cave is named after the Weta, a prickly pre-historic cricket that is called one of the world,s largest insects. Near Weta Cave is the Wellington sign designed with New Zealand’s own flare to be reminiscent of the Hollywood sign in California. It brings it's own touch of whimsy by highlighting the windy conditions in Wellington.
Wellington Cable Car: One of the more iconic things to do in Wellington is to ride the red cable car to the top of the hill. At the top, you can visit Wellington Botanic Gardens built on the side of the hills. The funicular is well known for its spectacular views of Wellington and the ride takes only five minutes.
Electric Bikes: Another great option in Wellington is an electric bike ride. Between the beautiful bay, Weta Cave, and the stunning views offered atop surrounding hills, an electric bike ride is the perfect way to see and enjoy the beauty of Wellington. There are several options but the one we preferred started at the waterfront and wounds its way to the Wellington sign and a stunning overlook of the city below from atop Mount Victoria.
Planning the perfect trip to New Zealand should include some time exploring beautiful Wellington and all it has to offer. These are just a few of the wonderful options available in Wellington.
