Doubtful Sound - Review

Exploring Fjordland National Park in New Zealand is a wonderful experience that you should consider.  We had the wonderful opportunity to explore this area via cruise ship and it enabled us to see several of the fjords/sounds starting with Milford Sound.  In all we explored 5 of these fjords/sounds in a day and it was well worth the time.  Unlike Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound connects to Thompson Sound providing the opportunity to sail through both sounds in a large arch.  We sailed into Thompson Sound then turned into Doubtful Sound thus entering and exiting through different fjords.  Any way you slice it, it is a wonderful journey that is not to be missed.  Sailing is just about the only way to see this stunning part of the world.

 

The sounds are extremely picturesque and the weather made them even more so.  We had a cloudy and rainy day, but in this part of the world that is not uncommon and to be honest, it adds to the beauty.  With the clouds hovering and clinging to the steep walls of the fjord and the rain creating beautiful waterfalls, it’s hard to take your eyes off the landscape.  The steep walls are covered in the most part with trees.  Where the rocks remain uncovered the contrast is staggering.  Sailing through this area is just breathtaking and awe-inspiring.

 

To top off the day, we had a pod of bottle-nosed dolphins play and jump along the side of our ship for a while.  They seemed to have such joy and it felt like they were having fun with us.  It was such a delight to see these beautiful and graceful animals alongside our ship leaping out of the water and gracefully diving back in again.  These animals radiate intelligence and I loved every minute they were with us.  What a marvelous and heartwarming experience!
