Milford Sound - Review
Published Monday, June 3rd 2019 - Updated Wednesday, July 3rd 2019No matter how you see it, Milford Sound is an amazing place. Carved out of the rock by glaciers and flooded by the sea, Milford Sound is stunning. We had the good fortune of visiting Milford Sound during our trip to Australia and New Zealand. The only way you can truly see the sound is on board a ship and lucky for us we were on a cruise. More than half the ships that plan to sail the sound end up having to cancel due to weather.
We arrive just before dawn. Though we were sailing into the sound in darkness, the sun began to rise as we reached the end or bottom of the sound. This was perfect timing. It was raining and this was both good news and bad news. The good news about the rain was the special treat of innumerable waterfalls cascading down the steep sides of the sound. The bad news was the clouds obstructed the sunrise; however, I will take the rain any day! The waterfalls created by the rain were spectacular.
We got a bonus treat as well. The wind was blowing quite strongly as we sailed out of the sound; which, sounds like a terrible thing but we were treated to the sight of waterfalls being blown upwards! It was such a spectacular sight that I didn’t mind the wind and was giggling quite madly as I took numerous photos of the waterfalls being blown upwards. Getting soaked was never quite so much
fun! The rain and mist made for an enchanting landscape and the wind made gravity irrelevant for a few moments with each gust. Such a delightful and awe-inspiring place.
