Flights to Australia
Published Monday, April 29th 2019 - Updated Tuesday, April 30th 2019One of the biggest obstacles to visiting Australia and New Zealand is simply getting there! I will admit while I was planning my trip, I was concerned about the flight. I have been to Europe multiple times and the flights were not excessively long but the jet lag was a hindrance. I could only imagine what it was going to be going to Australia with a longer flight. As it turned out, I was over thinking the situation.
I had the pleasure of flying on Virgin Australia Airlines. I can’t vouch for every airline but my experience on Virgin Australia was quite positive. My flight left LAX late at night around 11:00 p.m. I was in good old economy class so no special seating. I had plenty of leg room and the seat reclined more than most airline seats. Once dinner was served and I finished my movie, I settled in for the night. I am not one to sleep on airplanes. During our multiple flights to Europe, I was lucky to get in a couple of hours of sleep. Though I didn’t sleep soundly, I did get more sleep than I anticipated.
The airline kept the cabin dark and quiet. They don’t come around unless you push the call button for them. They do have a self serve snack station that you can use should you get hungry during the night. The entire flight is during the night and you arrive early in the morning so it makes sleeping easier. Breakfast was served about 3 hours prior to landing. I ate breakfast and watched another movie. I usually land in Europe wanting to get to my hotel and collapse as soon as possible. With my flight to Australia, I landed relatively refreshed and put in a full day around Sydney without the need for a nap. All in all, it was more enjoyable than most of my flights to or from Europe.
The return flight is quite a different story. This flight departs Australia during the day and the flight takes place during daylight hours so sleeping is more difficult. I found it difficult to sleep after a full night sleep the night before. They do come around with food options approximately every three hours. If you are sleeping, they will not disturb you. The self serve snack station is available and they have many movies to choose from. I actually watched an old movie that I had seen before in order to catch a catnap. Still, the inbound flight to Australia was enjoyable and Australia was well worth the time!
