AmaWaterways - Review
Published Wednesday, October 24th 2018 - Updated Tuesday, July 23rd 2019All river cruises are not created equal. It may seem that way; however, on closer inspection, you will find that there are some important differences. Here is our take on AmaWaterways.
This is not the ordinary River Cruise full of grey-haired geriatrics. You will find them here; however, there is an important difference. Most of the clients who sail with AmaWaterways are active. It doesn’t matter the age, the important difference is the activity level. I think every River Cruise offers a city walking tour at each stop. This seems to be the industry standard. If you are looking for something more, then you need to check into AmaWaterways.
More Active Options
Besides the ever-present city walking tour, AmaWaterways offers other options as well. We noticed that most stops included at least 3 -4 options for tours. Along the Rhine River, there were several options for wine tasting as well as beer tasting. If that is not your cup tea, how about a hike? Several of the places we stopped offered hikes. The hike options varied in difficulty and they explained not only the hike but the difficulty level in their travel documents so you could make a determination if the hike was for you.
Still not sold? How about a bike tour? Yes, you guessed it, AmaWaterways have bike tours as well. On our sailing, they had four opportunities to go on a bike tour. Some were more difficult than others and just like the hiking tours, they explain the tour and its difficulty in your travel documents. The one major difference from the hiking options is you can not sign up for the bike tours in advance. The sign up is done once you board the ship. They do have a limited number of bikes and they bring the bikes on the ship. I like that the bikes are owned by AmaWaterways, this cuts down on the risk of getting an old beat up bike that might not function the way you would expect. Let’s face it, we all know what rentals are like.
One other addition that you should be aware of. If you would like to take the city tour but would like a little bit of a challenge or maybe just a faster pace, AmaWaterways has an active walker tour. They still go to the old town and see the sites; however, you might find yourself walking to the old town rather than taking the motor coach. It is another option for those wanting just a little bit more.
